BAM Art Analysis
This artifact is an art analysis term paper written for ART 342, Modern Art after 1940, an art history course taught by Professor Garth Claassen at the College of Idaho.
This term paper challenged me to apply my knowledge of formal and contextual analysis to contemporary artwork. Rather than writing about art from a textbook, seen only in pictures, we were to visit the Boise Art Museum (BAM) and encounter the art in person. This essay demonstrates my ability to think critically about art and respond in informed, academic language (part of the Content Knowledge aspect of Domain #1). A proficient artist should be able to respond to artwork on his or her own, instead of always relying on the words of others. My experience with the Critical Messages exhibit at the BAM, as recorded in my essay, shows my ability to do this. This ability translates to the classroom, where the art teacher must be able to respond to student inquiry and direct classroom discussions with critical thought.
