Elements of Design Lesson Plan
This lesson plan is on the elements of design, and includes a review session. The lesson was created as an assignment for Exceptional Child for the General Educator. I took this course in the fall term of 2012, when it was taught by Mr. Michael Breach.
This art lesson plan focuses on core concepts of design, such as color scheme, symmetry, and pattern. It begins with a PowerPoint introducing new material to the students and includes checks for understanding. While students watch a presentation on the elements of design, they are asked to follow along with a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. Concluding the PowerPoint, students will work in pods to complete a review exercise with white boards, drawing non-linguistic representations of the elements just presented. After the review, students will do a four-square activity to demonstrate their learning.
The structure of this lesson and the pedagogical choices I made in designing it represent multiple faces of Danielson's Domain #1. You will see that I designed this lesson to incorporate a word wall, a visual PowerPoint presentation, a fill-in-the-blank worksheet, group work, white boards, and a four-square assignment. In my lesson students are given creative opportunities to experience the elements of design in visual, verbal, and linguistic formats at each stage of the learning process. I intentionally chose a diverse selection of instructional strategies with the goal of creating a lively and engaging lesson suitable for diverse learners.
